Key Light is the main sunlight. It's rendered and processed separately.

Fill Light is the ambient sky light. It's rendered and processed separately as well. Afterwards both passes are merged together.

The volumetric clouds are still a bit of a challenge. Wet-on-wet is the most common way of painting clouds, and simulating this effect can be tricky for a 3D render. I am still working on a new method for clouds.

I've been working on a technique for capturing traditional gouache animation backgrounds, but done in 3D for digital 2D/3D Animation workflows. Everything here is 3D, even the sky is using full 3D volumetric clouds. This time I'm incorporating a camera move, while keeping the brush strokes temporally stable. I could continue to tweak the color and background, but I just need to get this out. More to come in the future!
