We knew that caustics and godrays would play a big part of the underwater segments
So we did some initial tests during design
We landed on this look, and passed off our test to our partners at Superprod!

Superprod did great work, and helped us create the beautiful underwater world we were going for!
The Varuna episode of Ghee Happy is such a good combination of a beautiful set and a great musical number (The Tom Jones vibes are strong). In order to get the feel of the underwater set, we spent weeks doing lookdev during design. Simple ideas like caustics and godrays are not so straightforward when you take into account our unique stylization. We finally settled on the pill-shaped caustics which animate on 2s/3s, and I think the results look beautiful!
It also begs the question: Which way does a lobster wear pants?
